Make Your Story Count! Personal History Conference

The Utah Chapter of the Association of Personal Historians (Utah APH) invites you to Make Your Story Count! Personal History Conference.

We are excited to host an in-depth personal history conference to encourage more people to tell their life stories and preserve them for future generations.

Make Your Story Count! Personal History Conference is set for Saturday, November 3, 2012, from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at the Utah Cultural Celebration Center, 1355 West 3100 South in West Valley City, Utah. You are welcome to join us!

Pre-conference Seminar for Personal Historians on Friday, November 2, 2012, from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.  is designed especially for personal historians (and those who might like to be).  Two outstanding guest speakers/authors will participate at our event, Mary O'Brien Tyrrell and Dawn Thurston.

At Saturday’s conference (11/3), Mary will give the keynote address and Dawn will speak to the topic, “Put Yourself in Your Life Story.”

Four workshop options will be presented by Utah APH team members at the conference. You can choose two of the following:

  1. Recording with Electronic Media – Is It Right for You?
Explore audio and video recording as an option for your story. This workshop includes tips for creating a quality CD or DVD, the practical matter of equipment and costs, and a sample interview. Want to be a guinea pig?
Presenters: Dave Homer and Don Walton

  1. Creating a Book – Tips and Resources for Design and Production
A printed record is priceless. Learn helpful tips and available resources to help start and finish your project, guidelines for identifying and scanning photographs, book design and publication options for your budget.
Presenters: John Catron and Don Hancock

  1. Current Events of the Past – Connecting Story to Historical and Social Events
Welcome the reader into your world! Begin with a timeline of life events and weave significant historical happenings into your story. Explain everyday life with bits of social history, and fill in the memory gaps with a little research. Workshop examples will give you ideas.
Presenters: Elsa Jean Ewer and Linda Tucker

  1. Writing Your Story, One Hat at a Time
Writing about your life can be fun instead of frustrating. Start the process with a memory and move ahead, one step at a time. Clarify your objectives and learn your most important role in turning memories into stories.
Presenters: Paulette Stevens and Tabitha Thompson
